History of Brown Publishing Network
Brown Publishing Network was founded by Marie Brown in October 1983. The first corporate office consisted of a 200-square-foot basement space in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with room for one desk and a small conference table. Brown’s initial projects were in the areas of reading and language arts, reflecting Marie’s teaching background.
As the scope and scale of projects expanded, so did the company. Additional staff was hired, which necessitated acquiring additional space on the second floor of the Wellesley office building. Publishers’ requests continued to grow, and so did Brown. By 1986, Brown had become a full-service, all-discipline, K–12 development house. And by 2000, Brown occupied most of that Wellesley office building and had more than 40 employees.
After its 20th anniversary celebration—a gala weekend in New York City for 150 employees and their guests—Brown’s corporate headquarters moved into its current Waltham location, with space for up to 75 work stations. Brown now also has satellite offices in New York City and Austin, Texas. Throughout its history of expansion and growth, though, Brown has remained a family-owned business. Mark Brown, Marie’s son, is Vice President of Finance and Administration—and the heir-apparent (if Marie ever decides to retire!).
“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and your team for an outstanding job. Working under extreme schedule constraints and heavy workloads, your team proved once again that they are the industry’s A-team. ”
